Let the betting begin!

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend so I'll be hosting a little viewing party on Saturday, and I made these fun derby horse cupcake toppers for the occasion. I'll definitely need to add some place cards with horse racing names like, Hoof Hearted or Sotally Tober! Not to mention, try my hand at mixing up some mint juleps (then you can call me Sotally Tober)! 

One of my favorite movies of all time is Seabiscuit. The story of an underdog race horse that wins against all odds and gives hope to a family and a nation after the depression (so sappy, but so good....pass the tissues). So last year, we visited the California wine region and had a tour of Seabiscuits home. Apparently, celebrities like Bing Crosby would spend time there, so you can imagine how drop dead gorgeous the property is, and how mid century beautiful everything is there! So cheers to a happy weekend filled with racing, cocktails, cupcakes, and a little betting (wink)!

Supplies: Mini Plastic horses, bamboo skewers (or toothpicks), Martha Stewart white craft paint (wedding cake white), Martha Stewart yellow craft paint (chamomile yellow), Martha Stewart pink paint (party streamer), glue (E6000), and paint brush.

I love the colorful outfits jockeys wear so I decided to go with bright polka dots!  First, I applied a few even coats of white craft paint, and letting each coat dry in between coats.

Next, I used a thin brush to paint dots all over. I used a few different colors. 

Finally I cut skewers down to 3 inches and glued the flat end to the horse. I would suggest using toothpicks instead - I just didn't have any on hand...womp womp. 

The good news is this also makes a fun craft for kids.  Kids can paint the horses, and you can use this idea for birthdays parties, as well!
