DIY Mid Century Modern Storage Box

Why hello there!

A few months ago, I was in Los Angeles for a weekend and stopped in at  HD Buttercup - one of my favorite furniture stores... just casually hoping to run into Emily Henderson or Jeff Lewis (or any other famous interior designer..lol).  Anyway, I was there less than a minute when I fell head over heals for a beautiful Mid Century Modern media console made of American Walnut, with white doors, and brushed-on gold accents. With the price tag hover somewhere between I can afford this in about 20 years and NEVER...I decided to take the inspiration and make my own budget friendly version. Hence, today I'm sharing my HD Buttercup inspired, Mid Century Modern storage box...Not quite the real thing, but super chic and functional = win, win!

Here's what You'll need:

  • small paint brush

  • craft paints in white and metallic gold

  • dark walnut wood stain (I like this Varathane, fast dry formula)

  • painters tape

  • mini wood storage box (easy to find on amazon or your local craft store)

  • you may also need a rag or brush to paint on the wood

  • sand paper is optional, but I highly recommend it.

I started by covering the nobs in painters tape and painting the drawers with white craft paint. This wood took about two coats to fully cover. I let dry for about 20 minutes between coats.

Once the drawers were fully dried, I removed the painters tape and handpainted brush stroked using gold metallic craft paint. It's not supposed to look perfect, so really just go for it! Once the gold accents dried, I painted the nobs gold.

I used an old rag (jeans material) to stain the wood box.

I would highly suggest sanding the box down before staining it (kinda wish I had remembered that step). The stain didn't really adhere well to parts of the box, but it does give it a rustic look, so I'm happy with it!

Finally, fill box with craft supplies, sewing supplies, or even jewelry!

xoxo,
